In his head, a voice rang wildly. "GET IT!" it roared.
"ONLY WITH IT WILL YOU SUCCEED!"
He snatched the artifact into his hands, and
broke it free of its holds. How Fyora tried to protect it... Well, it was no
use. It would work this time... The voice commanded it to. And he had to listen
to the voice... Or else, all would be lost. *He* would be lost... But he wouldn't
fail. He couldn't fail... Or else he'd be dead.
"Now it begins," said the he and the Voice together.
"Guys! STOP IT!" hollered Lilly Fluff at the
top of her lungs. Her two younger siblings, Arrowtak the Lupe and KitaiMyou
the Krawk were at it again - this time Kita was throwing pillows from the Kau
print sofa at Arrowtak, who was vainly trying to reach his little sister.
"For the love of the Faeries, Kita!" shouted
Arrowtak. "I DIDN'T take your notebook!"
"YOU LIE!" yelled Kita, holding a pillow above
her head. "Prepare for the most unpleasant pillow fight of your life!"
"Stop it stop it!" said Tylali - a striped Shoyru
and the baby of the family. "Kita, don't!" Tylali held her face in her hands,
tears streaming down her face. Tylali had been the youngest until Kita had been
born - it had been Tylali herself who had taken her to Fungus Caves. Tylali
didn't always have a leveller head than Kita, but she did now.
Behind Tylali was one of the older sisters,
Airiea. Airiea was a purple Eyrie who didn't say much. She liked to fly, but
she always flew solo. She was a loner - something the entire family couldn't
believe. Airiea thought herself as a dark creature, Airiea wasn't as disconnected.
She was very close to their owner, and very close to her first sibling, Arrowtak.
The five of them were busy in the living room,
arguing until their throats were sore. None of them realized their owner was
watching in the doorway.
Suddenly, Tylali quit babbling in her little
voice, and saw Lacey - their owner - who was smiling at the lot of them.
"Are you guys ready for breakfast, or the war?"
she teased, walking back into the kitchen.
All five pets looked at each other, before flying
- some literally - into the dining room. As each of them sat in their regular
old spot on a regular old day, Arrowtak said his regular old words.
"You didn't make pancakes?" he said, grinning.
Lacey smacked him lightly on top of his head
with the newest copy of The Neopian Times, laughing. Lacey was horrible at cooking...
Especially pancakes. Sometimes, something to laugh about was a good escape.
"What was the argument about this time?" asked
the human, sitting down at her place at the table.
"Arrowtak took my notebook!" said Kita, still
glaring at her brother as she poured a bowl of Neoflakes.
"I did not!" said Arrowtak, returning her stare.
"I haven't touched your precious artwork at all this month..."
Lacey passed around the plate of sliced neggs
and the bottle of chocolate Kau Kau Farm milk.
"Well, getting off that subject..." said Lilly,
her Faerie Aisha wings fluttering in annoyance. "Do any of you know what day
it is?"
KitaiMyou looked utterly confused, but the rest
of the family smiled. It was basically Kita's birthday - the entire family had
been together for a whole year. Lacey had been visiting Neopia for a long time,
but the family had come together over those years, rather than all at once.
Everybody smiled. Suddenly, Airiea's eyes caught
sight of the clock.
"Oh!" she said, jabbing Arrowtak in the side
with her elbow. "We gotta get to school."
Everyone leaped out of their seats, and hugged
Lacey goodbye. They all trudged off to Neoschool on a completely normal morning,
as completely normal pets. But that wouldn't last long.
To be continued...
