Trapped Faeries

by beangeled

Faeries. Every Neopian knows them and we really love them. There are guilds, foods, books and a lot more dedicated to them and they have their own world way up on the clouds.

They even bless our pets, make them stronger and faster (maybe that's why we like them so much). But there is one main question after all these years that no one ever dared to ask:

Why are millions of faeries trapped in bottles and sold, auctioned, traded and even donated?

I have to admit that I never really thought about the little faeries trapped in those bottles. They were to me like codestones, dubloons and all the other things in Neopia. They could give my pet a level or an ability, but you had to be lucky, cause sometimes they just flew away. In the first days I spent in Neopia I bought a lot of faeries, but during the 10 month I'm playing NeoPets now, I only released a dozen of them, cause I mostly sold them to make Neopoints. But one day my attitude towards faeries changed unexpectedly (this sounds like the Island Mystic doesn't it?). It was the day when The Neopian Times Issue 37 came out. I think you can all remember the picture with Balthazar trapping a poor Light Faerie on the home page of NeoPets. That was the moment when I started to wonder who trapped the faeries? And why? Because you can't tell me a giant wolf is intelligent enough to trap faeries. So here I am trying to find some answers.

1.) Who could trap all those poor faeries?

One thing that's for sure it is not Balthazar, like many people think, because he's much to slow and too big. And you can't tell me faeries don't see him approach. They are up and away before you can even say "Asparagus". So who is it then you may ask? Well, I don't know all those evil creatures in Neopia (I'm very glad I don't), so I cannot really present a name. But the person must be very evil. Who else than a really evil person could trap those sweet creatures? And the person must be very fast, because the faeries are hard to catch. And the person (let's call him faerie catcher for lack of a better term) must be very thirsty. Why? Well where else should our mysterious faerie catcher have all those bottles, in which the faeries are trapped, from? So next time you see a NeoHome with lots of empty bottles in the back yard be very careful, especially when you're a faerie. After all it might as well be more then just one person. That's a horrible thought I know, but can one person really trap millions of faeries to sell them alone?

2.) Why would anybody trap a faerie?

This as a really hard question. I mean faeries are nice creatures they don't harm anyone (okay except the Battle Faerie, but I mean it's her job). And you don't have to trap them in small bottles, just that your pets get blessed when you release them, because it's much easier to just ask a faerie for a blessing (like the Water Faerie in the healing springs), than to trap her. Does our mysterious faerie catcher trap them to make 1 million NP really fast, like Balthazar always says? Or does the faerie catcher just hate faeries? Maybe someone like Jhudora, but then again she has a warm and dry cloud up there in Faerieland so why should she?

I hope you know now that Balthazar isn't our faerie catcher. I don't know why people still think it's him, maybe they just needed someone to give the blame to, cause it's much harder to admit that after all these years we still don't know how traps the faeries. The one thing that's clear, the faeries bless you pet when you release them, because they are glad to have their freedom again. And don't be angry with a faeries, that don't bless your pet, because they might still be in shock about the fact that they were trapped. And please remember next time you see a faerie or buy one or are given one by a friend:

Release her!
