NEOBOARDS - Everyone in Neopia has had a Neopets-related question before, even
you. If you think you haven't, think harder because I guarantee you have at
some point. Sometime in your life, you've wondered something like, "I wonder
where the Fruit Machine is?" or "I wonder how you get that cool secret avatar?".
Everyone has wondered things like these! So what's the best way to get answers
to questions such as these? Ask on the boards, of course! Many people realize
that the smart decision in this case is to ask for help, and no harm can come
from asking a simple question. However, many of these smart people don't know
the correct way to ask a question, or the simple etiquette rules that one must
follow while asking for help. Never fear, carnapepper is here to save the day!
Follow these quick and easy steps and your question will be answered in no time!
The first rule of help etiquette is one of the most important. Ask your question
on the correct board! There is nothing more annoying to members of the Battledome
board (for example) than having people come in and ask where their shop is!
If you have a question about shops, make sure you ask them on the Shops board.
Or if you have a question about avatars, ask them on the Avatars board! There
is a little exception to this rule, however, to make your life as a knowledge
seeker easier. That exception is the Help board! The Help board is, obviously,
just for help! You can ask any question there without fear of ridicule, and
most everyone on the Help board is willing to assist you with whatever question
you may have. The kind folks at the Help board are very busy helping people
and socializing, however, and may not have time to answer your question quickly.
If you have a very specialized question, such as one about a secret avatar,
your best bet is to go to the board related to that question for quick answers.
This second rule is very important as well, and if it's not followed, you won't
get anywhere in anything, much less getting answers. Be polite!
Yes, that's the rule. If you're rude to people who are trying to help you, do
you think they're going to want to help you anymore? The answer, of course,
is NO! Even on Neopets, the golden rule still applies: Treat others as
you want to be treated. Think about it this way... if you were trying to give
someone some answers to a question they had, and they started yelling at you
because of whatever reason, would you be too excited? Nope, you wouldn't! You'd
probably get pretty angry, actually, and maybe even start a fight. Neopets is
no place for fights (except in the Battledome, of course)! Remember that behind
those avatars and usernames and pretty fonts, there are real people from all
over the world, trying to have some fun. Don't ruin that for them just because
Speak coherently! That is rule number three, and although it isn't quite as
important as the first two rules, it still plays a very large role in determining
whether or not you're going to get your question answered! Do not purposely
spell words incorrectly, such as using "u" instead of "you". That makes people
not take you seriously, and then they might not want to answer any questions
you have. Also, try and use correct grammar and spelling whenever possible.
If you're not sure how to spell a word, whip out the trusty dictionary and look
it up. It's really not too difficult to do and it'll make people respect you
more and most likely want to answer! It's okay if you make a typo or accidentally
use the wrong form of "your" in your sentence, as long as people can generally
understand what you're trying to say. However, if your question looks something
like this: "omg21!! lyk hoe u gte 2 hiden towr?!11!!?", chances are people won't
take the time to answer.
Don't get mad if people won't answer your question. Even if someone posts a
simple, "I dunno" in response to your query, don't go off on a rampage and chew
them out for it! Just wait patiently, and maybe post something like, "Anyone
know the answer?" to bump up your topic to the top of the board. If no one answers
for a long time, even after bumping your topic several times, wait another couple
minutes and post again. Maybe someone will see this time. Do not post
the same message or topic multiple times without waiting for an answer first.
That's called spamming and not only is it annoying, it's also a reportable offence,
as it slows down the boards and looks messy. Wait calmly and keep repeating
this step until someone happens to see your board and takes the liberty of answering
Another highly annoying thing to watch out for is over-repeated topics and
questions. I've especially noticed this happening when a new secret avatar is
released. Positively everyone on the boards is asking about it and it gets old
quickly. So if your question is about something recent like that, check the
other topics on the board before making your own. The chances are very high
that your question has already been answered. The more times it's been answered
already, in fact, the less likely it is that you're going to be helped if you
post the same question. So before you post your topic, just quickly skim over
most of the recent ones and look for anything related to your question. If you
need help with something obscure, however, it's probably safe to assume that
you can get away with asking it no matter what.
Generally, a lot of people ask questions all over the Neopets boards. As well
as asking questions, helping people is also very rewarding and creates a better
Neopia for everyone, so if you've got nothing to ask, try helping out some less
fortunate people and sharing your knowledge! Trust me, it's worth it. ;)
